Big Leo artists Hector Sanchez and Cynthia Groseclose teamed up for this sumptuous project on citrus (with fab design by Nicole Murtaugh!), coming to a mailbox near you. There is nothing like that first moment of peeling an orange or cutting open a grapefruit – the smell of citrus instantly brightens any day. We really wanted to do scratch and sniff for this mailer, but it just isn’t the same as the real thing. Almost better to open the envelope, find this promo, and let your imagination taste the delightful imagery. But one word of advice – try not to look at it before lunch.

Jim Bastardo has photos in the new Martha Stewart special Organizing issue – it is a nice little book that has great ideas on saving space. Maybe it just all our stylist friends but tchotchkes start to band together in a mob of angry objects that threaten to storm the peaceful calm of any apartment. Jim puts them in their place with an epic run to the Container Store and some nice lighting. Now we have photo proof that a room can be nice and organized, at least for a day. A girl can dream…

Hector Sanchez photographed this super cute story for Sweet Paul Magazine’s spring issue. Easter is one of the craftiest holidays because honestly, everyone needs a good excuse to dye eggs for the big hunt. Who doesn’t love to look for Easter eggs? Being an adult means that you can walk down to the store and buy a huge case of candy, but the thrill of the hunt is what makes them so much more delicious. And find all the eggs before those grubby kids so you can hoard all the jelly beans for yourself and just nomnomnom… er, yeah. See you on Sunday!

Dumais Interior Design

New York Magazine went behind the scenes of interior designer Kevin Dumais‘s new apartment. He downsized, from 800 sq ft to 350 sq ft. For an interiors photographer, small spaces are the ultimate challenge. How far back can you go, how wide of a lens can you use, how can you really capture the depth of a small room? Good thing Hector Sanchez was up to the challenge – in this slideshow on NY Mag’s site you can see more images of the beautiful finishing work. It almost makes me want to find a smaller place… but I’d settle for a makeover instead.

Bedding Within Reach

Design Within Reach has just launched a new line of bedding. Before you queue up the usual bed jokes, go check out the line, it is actually really nice. Italian sheets, coverlets, duvet covers, and pillowcases. Sleek and comfy all wrapped up into the ultimate naptime. All photographed by the sharp eye of Jim Bastardo. Also, be sure to go behind the scenes into the bed-making details in this video. Note to self: do not try to take a nap on a photo shoot. Too many strobe pops.

Throwing Curves

Eva Ziesel described herself as ‘a maker of useful things.’ Such an understatement from one of the titans of 20th century design. From someone who survived solitary confinement in Stalin’s prisons, took the last train out of Austria when the Nazis invaded, and arrived in the US with $67 in her pocket. From someone who went on to teach at Pratt and was given the first one-woman show at the New York MOMA. Just last year Jim Bastardo was fortunate enough to be assigned her portrait by Design Within Reach. A truly special opportunity and I think he really created an enduring image. Some people are so much a part of what they do, and Eva just lived her creations. And they will let her live long after she is gone. Truly, that is grace.

The past year was a whirlwind of new projects, new friends and new faces. Below is a sampling of the images that Big Leo artists helped produce in 2011, and it represents only a small fraction of the projects that we took on. We are so grateful to be able to collaborate with so many creative people and look forward to a whole new season of making the best images come to life. Cookies After All

The only thing better than a cookie is a giant cookie. And the only thing better than a giant cookie is a ginormous cookie. Case in point – scale the heights of these beauties shot by Hector Sanchez and styled by Paul Lowe himself for the holiday issue of Sweet Paul Magazine. My personal favorite is the ice-skating shot – wouldn’t mind sinking knee-deep into that gooey caramel. We’re going to have to eat our way out!

Too Many Celebrities in the Kitchen

Paula Deen, Carla Hall, Tom Colicchio and the Neely’s are all crowded into a small kitchen trying to make Thanksgiving dinner for their friends at Redbook Magazine. It is hot, busy and everyone is pushing and shoving to get more time in front of Hector Sanchez‘s camera. That’s when it happens. Someone used the last stick of butter, and someone else turned down the oven temp before the turkey was done, and with tensions running high, Paula dumps an entire bag of bread crumbs on Carla’s head. From there it devolves into an all star food fight. We would post the pictures that Hector shot of the melee, but that depends on how much ransom we can get from the involved parties’ PR firms. (If this sounds anything like your family Thanksgiving, we’re right there with ya. Happy turkey day!)
