Andrew Purcell behind the camera. Carrie Purcell at the stove. A studio chock full of bread and cheese for Food Network Magazine’s article on 50 grilled cheese sandwiches. Just thinking about it makes me want to diet for a week. You know, so that the next week I can eat all 50. By the end of the shoot, Andrew’s camera was so caked in butter and melted dairy products that all the digital files had grease stains. Ok, we’re exaggerating a little. But it is not an exaggeration to say that the Purcells are the undisputed champions of gooey sandwich goodness. Please pass the napkins.

Drab to Mega Fab

There is nothing better than digging in with your fingers. Utensils are so stodgy. Carrie and Andrew Purcell were perfect for this shoot on finger food, because they are both just so hands on when it comes to cooking and capturing the magic. This is part of why their shoots have such a personal feel and individual style. In this shoot for the holiday issue of Sweet Paul Magazine, you can learn how to make Maple Bacon Popcorn. Goes well with just about anything. Especially a warm fire and to defrost those fingers.

The past year was a whirlwind of new projects, new friends and new faces. Below is a sampling of the images that Big Leo artists helped produce in 2011, and it represents only a small fraction of the projects that we took on. We are so grateful to be able to collaborate with so many creative people and look forward to a whole new season of making the best images come to life. Enter Truvia. The seemingly daunting task was far easier than anyone could have thought as mastermind Carrie developed a whole new crop of recipes. And the verdict? Super sweet. And by sweet we mean gorgeous!

Andrew Purcell goes back to his roots in this story from Food Network Magazine. Growing beets in the garden is just so easy – and there is nothing like the feeling of pulling up a giant beet out of the cool ground, washing off the dirt, tossing it in to the pot, and then that beautiful purple starts to seep into the water. In this article you can peel back the squares to find cooking tips – but I know that chef Mr. McGregor would pair these nicely with Peter Rabbit, if he could catch the varmint.

Hack the Salad Bar

I wonder if places like Whole Foods track the most popular salad ingredients that people choose, and keep an eye on how the salad bar fares as a profit center. There are a lot of ways that you can save money there – in this story from Food Network shot by and styled by Andrew and Carrie Purcell, you can see how different ingredients are more or less expensive compared to the produce on the shelf. Of course, you could always take it to the extreme, but I’m not sure how a salad composed entirely of bacon bits and sun-dried tomatoes would taste. 100 Degrees and Grilling

On June 9th and 10th, so far the hottest days of the summer, photographer Andrew Purcell joined a cast of culinary all-stars on the set of Martha Stewart’s Grilling Secrets of the Master Chefs which premieres Friday June 24th at 8pm on The Hallmark Channel.

Andrew and his team braved 100-degree heat and the intermittent threat of thunderstorms to capture these great behind the scenes moments of Martha and her guests: Emeril Lagasse, Bill Taibe, Public’s Brad Farmerie, America’s female grilling expert Elizabeth Karmel and more. Be sure to check out Martha’s blog for more behind the scenes fun before the show airs tonight. Whether it’s delicious smoky BBQ goodness or the irreplaceable experience of mingling among these super chefs, the heat is always worth it. And if you can’t stand the heat, well, you know.

Dog Days of Summer

The biggest downside to working with food photographers and stylists is that when you’re mad hungry, being surrounded by images of amazing food is a mild form of torture. Take these hot dogs, for example. Not just the the dogs themselves, but the idea of a weekend afternoon at the grill, under some shade trees, with a cold beer and hot dogs with pickles, relish, tomatoes, onion, mustard, and peperoncinos. Put that image into your head before lunch on a Tuesday, and you’ll see why Andrew Purcell again flaunts the Geneva Conventions’ rules against cruel and unusual punishment.
